Navy Halloween Costumes

November 30th, 2009 Sue

Halloween is the only time of the year when one can confidently sport any kind of attire. So, this is an opportunity for many to dress up and emulate characters that they have often fantasized. Costumes of pirates, witches and angels are very common in Halloween parties. However, if you want to stand out in the midst of the crowd, consider navy Halloween costumes.

Although the navy and the armed forces were traditionally regarded as male professions, there is nothing stopping women from donning a uniform. Of course, they look sexier in uniform than men. This Halloween, why not try something different and inspired by the boys in blue. Remember, women’s navy costumes allow greater possibilities of experimentation than men’s costumes.

Navy Halloween Costumes: Actual Attire

Navy Halloween costumes are available in a variety of styles, materials and sizes. It is up to the wearer to choose the type she wants to wear. You may want to dress up in a slightly conservative but sophisticated manner or in a downright sexy costume.

The following are some of the unique options that you may exercise to become a head turner:

  • Matching a bikini top with a pair of high-waist pants with some accessories such as a hat, necktie and gloves, will definitely make you the cynosure of the party.
  • For a sweet and cute look, you can sport a mini skirt and match it up with a very short top and boots or high stockings and stilettos. The only accessory that a sailor’s costume would require is a sailor’s hat.
  • If you wan to pose as a captain, you can consider wearing high rise pants, a top along with a hat. An anchor patch on the costume would help you get into the role.
  • For a more chic look, consider wearing a white halter mini dress and matching it up with white stockings and stilettos.

Was This Man the Real Designer of the VW Beetle?

November 30th, 2009 Sue

Was This Man the Real Designer of the VW Beetle?

From time to time rumours circulate that Professor Porsche was not the actual designer of the Beetle. Even Hitler, when he approached him to develop a "People's Car," provided sketches that resembled the car's final shape. But now comes a book by Dutch author and historian Paul Schilperoord in which he claims that an engineer named Josef Ganz should have been credited with the design. The Hungarian-born engineer had a revolutionary concept for a new car he called the Maikäfer (May Beetle). It featured an all-independent suspension, rear engine, and an aerodynamic shape not unlike what would eventually become the Volkswagen. Since he lacked the financial backing to build a car and was also an automobile journalist, Ganz published several articles supporting his ideas.

Being Jewish in Germany was Ganz' downfall. The existing manufacturers apparently viewed him as a threat to their stability and, perhaps not by coincidence, he found himself arrested by the Gestapo on fake blackmail charges. He was eventually released, tried to build the car in Switzerland, but according to the book, the Swiss government attempted to steal his designs. Meanwhile Hitler, totally ignoring the revolutionary May Beetle, called on Professor Porsche to design and engineer the People's Car. After years of legal battles Ganz moved to Australia to work for Holden, the GM subsidiary. He died poor though not quite forgotten, thanks to Schilperoord's "Het Ware Verhaal van de Kever." English translation: "The True Story of the Beetle."

Minds In Progress: Mental Illness in American Cinema

By Simon Augustine, M.Div

INTRODUCTION

Moviegoers and Madmen

Men are more interested in what they see when dreaming than what they see when awake.

- Diogenes

The movie theater is a miniature mental asylum. A temporary home made of cushioned seats (and padded, sound-proof walls) for the bereft, the dazed, the longing, the beautiful losers; men and women who need images almost as much as they need real people.

Maybe that explains why some of the most iconic and compelling characters in American cinematic history are those who embody madness in one of its many forms; like we moviegoers who watch and live vicariously through these fictional people, the characters themselves struggle with a relationship between reality and image, trying to find a fulcrum between the outside world and imagination: Randall P. McMurphy, irreverent would-be savior of “The Cuckoo”s Nest;” Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes, deranged stalker/fan par excellance, “hobbling” her favorite author in Stephen King”s Misery; Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, “god”s lonely man,” dangerous dreamer, epitome of urban social alienation; Dr. Hannibal Lecter, fascinating in his genius brand of cannibalistic insanity; or Sally Field as Sybil, bringing the complexity and pathos of multiple personality disorder to national consciousness. And the list goes on….

These are the rebels and sufferers of delusion who buck the system, fight against the status quo, or terrorize the neighborhood; the pin-ups of our hearts; quintessential American (anti-)heroes who dramatically attempt to change reality, either in the streets or in their minds-with consequences of chaos, societal upheaval, or a measure of personal healing. And who among us has not walked into a theatre in hopes of changing ourselves by seeing something new, by dreaming with assistance, understanding our identity through fresh images and the words of unreal people? We watch the crazy-brave on the screen to measure our lives and minds against their thoughts and deeds; and with a unique sense of self-reflexive grandeur and paranoid fondness for the power of The Image that only movies bestow on us-we the believers so skilled at a suspension of disbelief-we suspect that perhaps our heroes and villains of semi-reality are watching us too, making sure we are sufficiently moved by their efforts.

Getting Rid of Credit Card Debts with a Debt Relief Program

November 19th, 2009 Sue

A credit card debt relief program helps people who can not afford their minimum monthly payments. More and more people are getting into delinquency, given the significant increase in Adjustable Mortgage Rate (ARM) payments. However, you can always opt for a reliable debt management company if you face problems with your personal finances or unsecured debts.

Debt Relief Program Options Before You

If you are use credit cards to purchase goods that are normally bough with cash, such as gas, groceries and utility bills, you need a relief program. When you contact a debt management company or a financial advisor, you will be given choices in terms of the method you can follow. Let us discuss the major options available to get rid of credit card debt.

Debt Settlement: It involves negotiating with your creditors to reduce the amount you owe. Besides bankruptcy, this is the fastest and easiest method in a debt relief program. It is a great option for those who owe a large amount of money in credit cards and are unable to make monthly payments. The major advantage is that you will be making lower monthly payments with reduced interest rates and total debts.

Credit Counseling: This option involves negotiating with your credit card companies to lower interest rates. This program is suitable for people who make their monthly payments, but worry about high interest rates. With a credit counseling program you can become debt-free completely within four to five years.

Credit Card Balance Transfers: You can transfer your balances from higher interest rate credit cards to a new account with a lower interest rate. However, there may be hidden charges or the promotional offer might be for a very short period of time. If a credit card company is offering zero interest rates or low interest rates, make sure that the promotional period is at least for a year.

It is true that you can get rid of your debts with the help of a debt relief program from a good debt settlement company. Finding the right one may be little difficult, since there are many fly-by-night companies out there. Opt for a company that has been in business for at least a few years and has done well.

Tablecloths and Creative Ways to Dress Your Table For a Party Or Holiday

November 11th, 2009 Sue

Tablecloths are the foundation of your table setting; use them to help create the ambiance for your event. Do you want a formal feeling or more casual? Perhaps playful or festive would better describe the gathering you are planning. The colors and materials you choose for your tablecloth, napkins, runners and accessories can set the tone.

Of course there are a variety of materials you can select from, including paper which is more casual and can be thrown away after being used, making clean-up a breeze. There is a large assortment of paper goods to choose from including specific holiday themes. A vinyl table cloth with paper napkins is another option, which also tends to be more casual and is often used for outdoor affairs or a childrens party. A third choice of course is fabric, which can be used for either a formal or casual occasion.

I prefer to use fabric tablecloths. They may cost more to purchase, however, in the long run they are less expensive then paper because they can be used for years. You can put them with matching or coordinating fabric napkins or with paper napkins. Unlike the table linens our grandmothers used, today tablecloths are available in a large selection of washable fabrics that are easy to maintain.

As far as color goes, your cloth should coordinate with your dining room colors and not necessarily reflect the occasion you are celebrating. That way you can use it for a variety of occasions and it will always compliment you homes d?cor. The food should be the focal point of your table, do not select a cloth with a busy pattern or print that will take away from what is on the menu.

Use accessories like napkin rings, a centerpiece, candle holders or a table runner to indicate the theme of the party. If the themes colors (green for Saint Patricks’ Day or red for Christmas) do not fit in with your room setting then go with neutral accessories that look good with your d?cor. You can still make it special and festive setting by using fun, over the top glittering accents you would not use every day. Or use natural items that are appropriate for the occasion like dried leaves and acorns for Thanksgiving or rose petals for Valentines day.

One way to change the look of a plain tablecloth is to add a transparent, shimmering Organza overlay; or sprinkle an assortment of sequences or glitter on top of the cloth. The idea is to make it special and different from what you would normally do.

To determine your tablecloth size, measure the length and width of your table and decide how much fabric you want to come down on each side….that is the drop. Add the drop X2 to the table dimensions and this will give you the size the cloth should be. For a formal look you can have the cloth go to the floor. If you add a leaf to your table for special occasions, remember to add the size of the leaf.

Benefits of Vancouver BC Real Estate Investment

Due to the scheduled 2010 Winter Olympics, there has been a rapid infrastructural development in the city. Due to this, the prices of the real estate have steadily gone up in the city. This has made the city an attractive destination since the rate of price appreciation on the investment is very high. The cosmopolitan nature of the city together with its location and climate makes it an attractive destination for travelers and visitors to the city. When you think happiness I hope you think that little black dress

November 9th, 2009 Sue

I don’t know why but whenever I take pictures outside with the wonderful sunset and the tall grass, it reminds me of Taylor Swift music videos and pictures. I’m not saying it’s inspiration or anything, but it’s super nice to have that feel to my pictures.. y’know? So this title is from the song Tim Mcrgaw, it’s such a wonderful song. Listen to it a.s.a.p!

Cheers,

Critter crossing

November 5th, 2009 Sue

Critter crossing

Just a bit of whimsy in Good Neighbor Brian’s forest. He has cut a road through the trees leading to his mobile home and tool shed (shed! It’s more like a semi-trailer). His plan is to leave the open meadow before this clear (though he will have to march a couple of power poles across it). Thus the road through the trees, which he’s been improving slowly.

I’m not sure that any critters actually cross at this point of the road, but the tree seemed substantial enuf to lend its support, so there it is.
